bayanne house archaeology

The Tafts of Bayanne have been known as an ancient settlement for many years but only between 1995 and 1997 has formal archaeological work been carried out. During the excavation period a large number of finds lead the digging team to believe that this site may well date from at least the Middle Bronze Age and was occupied into the Early Historic period.

At the time of writing, the final report had not yet been completed as the dating and expert analysis of finds was still to be finished. A small number of artefacts can be seen together with photographs and preliminary reports at Bayanne. The site itself is easily accessible and can be examined at first hand. The Tafts of Bayanne have now been adopted by Cullivoe Primary School as their site for the Young Archaeologists Club as part of the National Museums of Scotland initiative.
